Need Stage lighting design for small San Francisco Runway Show

I'm in the process of working on the production of my first fashion show in Nov. The owner of the venue space that I was originally going to have use of for free flaked at the last minute so I'm scrambling now to find a venue and will be using the funds that I had set aside for the production itself will be used on the venue. So needless to say, I have a very small budget.

To give you an idea, the fashion show will present a new collection of couture Egyptian Belly Dance costumes and will be held in a small club/lounge type atmosphere. If you're interested in discussing this more, please send me a message as I don't get to log onto tribe very often.
Thank you!!

Lighting of a small show

I am trying to help a group of dancers by doing some lighting for a show .

I have no budget to aquire more equipment but here is what I have:

8x PAR 38 (100 watt)
4x PAR 46 (200 watt)
2x eight foot stands
No dimmers or controlers.

I know a little about setting up lights and I am thinking something like.

Side lighting an area about 25 to 30 feet wide. I am going to buid short stands for the PAR 38's (4 with 2 lights each) putting them closer to the floor. I was thinking to use a 1/2 ct blue gel in these.

The PAR 46's I will put on the 8 foot stands and use something like a paler lavender or medium bastard amber gel.

Hopefully if this works out for them I will be able to get them to add to the equipment in the future.

What do you think?

Im attempting to build a sound system from salvaged parts and would appreciate advice.

I've pulled 6 car speakers so far: 4 15watt 6 0hm speakers (prolly good for mids) and two 4ohm 80 watt speakers(prolly good as tweeters)
.I'd like to house them in salvage steel drums for resonance...I'll supplement Bass with purchased woofers... How much more raw material do i need for loud system and what are the basics of a hook-up? Ive searched the net havent seen anything simple and informative. More elite technojargon. Whats the formula? what kind of amp fits these speakers and so on and so forth.
Peace and thanks for the attention.

Hey Everyone,

The time has come for me to purchase my own multi meter. I just picked up a great, steady, LD gig and I'm going to need to make the investment. Ther are quite a few options out there and I'm not sure what to buy.

I'm looking to spend under $200, but I want one that will be reliable. A clamp would be nice, but not neccesary. Any suggestions?

Video & Light control on a PC via DMX and MIDI

Does anyone know of or can refer me to, a computer program that will run on a laptop computer (Wintel in this case) that will run a full light show? We specifically want to do the following at the same time (yes I'd rather have an LD, but can't afford one yet to travel with us):
1) Play a video backdrop on a projection screen from the laptop DVD player or hard drive
2) Control 8 color changers and 6 scanners via DMX512
3) Start and stop scenes based on the input of a MIDI foot controller.

Thank you.

Does anyone know anything about the Entec Open DMX?

I currently have a 24 channel DMX board running my light show.. here's what I have :
2 Stage Washes (built - in DMX)
6 Par 56 Cans running on (1) 4 channel DMX power pack controller
2 Strobes, 3 separte sets of pins running on (1) 4 channel DMX power pack controller
6 Pins, 1 Dance lite running on (1) 4 channel DMX power pack controller.

I was looking at the Entec USB. I have an old HP notebook that is an AMD 550 w/ 180MB ram.. running Windows 2000
Can I plug this unit into one of my USB ports and using some of the freebie software that runs on this thing do the following :

1. Control each individual channel
2. Run chase scenes
3. Bump individual lites with the keyboard

My current board is going bad and I would like to be able to do this. As you can see, my light show is not that big.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Software For Light Design

Hi everyone. I play lead guitar in a cover band called Phat Bastard (www.getphat.com) based out of Phoenix, Az. I have been painfully putting together a light show for us and we play different size bars, so we need some flexibility. Does anyone know of a software package that shows you lights as you place them (around drums, stage, etc) and that would give you some template ideas or something like that? Like a lighting theme or similiar?

Most of the software packages that I have found either do one of two things. (1) - Design the light show for programattic reasons (to hook up with DMX controllers and run the show). or (2) - Design light show with 3d rendering or information of the sort.

I really am not looking for either one of these. I just would like to be able to put something together for layout or as if you were looking towards the stage. Almost like a Visio template if you will.

Anyways, I'm not sure that I'm explaining this correctly, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx, Bruce

i volunteered to produce a music video for the Paranoids for my friend's directing debut. we need at least 2 DV cams and lighting for a video to be shot in the band's ultragroovy 70s living room/warehouse. this director is demanding like most and wants the crew to have the same look as the dancing people so check out the band's website. it's all for love and will take only one day to shoot so i guess we should feed you guys and get you drunk. really it's about having extrasuperfuntime and getting some credits. film students welcome.

VJs needed for Burning Man

I'm handling the VJ bookings for a couple of the larger camps at the burn this year - one of them has the whole kit and kaboodle ready and waiting for you (screens, projectors, simple mixer, dvd players), the other has the screens but needs some gear.

We're also looking for content as I need about 50-60 hours of material for this project!

Please contact me by private message if interested.

BTW - one camp has 2 screens that are 15 x 12 feet and the other has a similair setup with slightly smaller screens!

Need Lighting help for Burning Man Project!!

MindWeave is designed to be a State Eliciting Space. To create an experience of clarity and insight by combining elements of architecture/sculpture, lighting design, visual art, and sound compositions...check out the MindWeave Tribe!

We are creating this art instillation for BurningMan 2005. It is essentially a 15 foot woven 3/8 dome shape. It will be constructed with woven willow and will be permaeble to light. (Imagine a loosely woven twig basket turned over!) I want to light the interior space and the exterior surface independently. I want to program through slow color transitions independently at the same rate; ie. the inside is red, the outside is blue...slowly changing through the spectrum.

My original idea was to find a CHEAP 3-4 channel programmer and cluster MR16 24-32 ( www.superbrightleds.com) LED lamps in threes( Red, Blue, Green) Total interior
RGB trios four on a channel, total exterior RGB trios eight on two channels. I am realizing that LEDS my be too expensive and unnecesary.

It is starting to look like I may be able to create the same effect with less cost using some kind of stage lighting. My budget is around $1000.00 and I have about 1500 watts of gennie power for the lighting. HELP!!!

By the way, my technical skills are shit and will be looking for ease in assembly and programming.

Thanks for your help!!
